Make It All About Her

Today is Valentine’s Day.

Roses by a note that says "Be my Valentine"

Some men say it’s a day that is all about her. I say you should MAKE it all about her.

Isn’t she worth it?

Saying Love With Chocolate

While it is not universally true, the vast majority of women really like chocolate. If your wife is not one of the outliers, be sure to include some good quality chocolate with what you give her for Valentine’s Day.

Chocolate mousse with raspberries in glass serving glasses

And if at all possible, do better than store-bought candy.

  • The easy way to do this is to buy two servings of a really fancy chocolate dessert. A grocery store with a bakery will probably have something. Or find a dedicated bakery or check some of the nicer restaurants in town. The best items are likely to sell out early, so get there early. If it’s warm where you are (trying not to covet) bring a small cooler with an ice pack.
  • Or go all out and make her a nice rich chocolate dessert. I do the one below regularly and it’s not much work for an outstanding dessert.

Either way, serve it up to her when the kids are elsewhere and tell her that you love her more than she likes chocolate!

Chocolate Mousse:

Ingredients
• 1packet (2 tsp) unflavored gelatin
• 3 TBS cold water
• 1/3 cup boiling water
• 2/3 cup white sugar
• 3 TBS cocoa powder
• ½ cup cold Baileys Irish Cream or Coffee Liqueur such as Kahlua
• 1¾ cup cold heavy cream
• 1 tsp vanilla

Directions
• Chill a small mixing bowl and whisk in freezer for half an hour before starting.
• Stir gelatine into cold water. Let sit for 1 minute.
• Pour in boiling water and mix until gelatin is fully dissolved. Allow to cool.
• Add cocoa, sugar and heavy cream to the chilled bowl whisk with an electric whisk until stiff peaks form.
• Slowly add alcohol, gelatine, and vanilla, whisking continuously at high speed. Whip till blended and soft peaks form.
• Let stand 5 minutes.
• Pour into four glasses or coffee cups.
• Cover and refrigerate.
• Top with raspberries and/or whipped cream if desire.

Man Up And Be Her Valentine

I have tweeted on a number of occasions that if something is important to our spouse, it should be important to us. At least once I tweeted that twice the same day, once with the tag #SexTip, and again with #MarriageTip.

Yes, that was intended to suggest to women they need to make sex a top priority if it’s important to their guy. But it also means you need to be all about what matters to her.

So if Valentine’s matters to you wife, man up and do it for her.

Don’t give me BS about how it is too commercialized (it is) or was made up by the greeting card industry (it was not). If you don’t do it, what you are telling your wife is she’s not really important to you. Unless that is the message you want to send, I suggest you do more than a last-minute card and whatever chocolates are left on the shelf.

Show Your Love Daily

Over on The XY Code, a fellow commented about Valentine’s Day being a Hallmark holiday. Of course, it predates Hallmark by 1,500 years, but I understand the sentiment.

As a day to celebrate your love Valentine’s Day is fine. The problem is when one of you, almost certainly the one with a uterus, expects too much.

couple being affectionate under a bridge

But let’s go deeper. Why does she expect too much? Is it because she watches too many chick-flicks? Is it because of her friends? Those and other influences from her culture may well be factors, but if your wife is way too into Valentine’s Day I suspect something else is at play. Maybe she is all worked up about the day because she doesn’t feel sufficiently loved and appreciated the other 364.25 days of the year?

If you showed her love daily and she had no doubt you appreciate her, do you think she might expect less on February 14th?

BTW, boycotting Valentine’s tells your wife that not being controlled by a day is more important to you than she is. I know that’s not what it means to you, but I assure you there is no way you’re going to convince her that ignoring the day is not a slap at her. Please do SOMETHING to affirm your love tomorrow.

I’ve been bit distracted, and Valentine’s Day is sneaking up on me.

Valentine’s Focus

Tomorrow is Valentine’s Day.

I’ve often heard men say Valentine’s Day is for women. She expects him to do all kinds of things, and he’s not going to get anything in return. (With “anything” often meaning sex!)

Valentine's Focus

I don’t know what your history is with February 14th, but for many men, it’s not a great day.

This year, why not make the day all about your wife. Show her your love in the ways that speak to her. Do what she wants. Go where she wants. Shower her with love and attention, and EXPECT NOTHING IN RETURN. Give her a day that’s all about her, and do it by choice because you love her.

If Valentine’s has never worked out for you, you have nothing to lose by doing this. And, if it makes her feel loved and special, you both win.
