Fences Not Boundaries

I know some men have a negative reaction to the mention of boundaries because of the misuse of a book by the same name. I was recently introduced to another take on boundaries that I like a lot better. Rather than boundaries, let’s set up fences.

Man climbing a fence

Boundaries are lines in the sand. Anyone can walk over it, and it can become obscured. But a fence is a barrier that is not easily removed or obscured. A fence also takes some effort to erect. You can draw a line in the sand easily, and that can mean doing it without enough thought. If you want to put up a fence you need to think about it and plan. Fences are never hasty, half-considered things.

You can, of course, climb a fence. But it takes a bit of effort and it takes making a clear choice. Sometimes it’s acceptable to climb a fence, but the fence makes you think about it first.

And what about those on the other side of the fence? You can “accidentally” step over a line, but climbing a fence is a determined choice.

Your life needs fences. You need fences that keep you from going where you should not. You need fences that make you stop and ask yourself if you have a good reason to climb over. You also need fences that keep others from using or abusing you.
