I just scheduled the following for retweet on the TMB twitter feed:
“It’s your duty as a husband to bring out the best in your wife, to build her up, to make her feel wonderful, beautiful and strong!” @AwesomeHusbands
“How deeply we can love another is largely dependent upon how deeply we love ourselves. Many love relationships end due to self hatred.” @FeliceDunas
I agree with both of those fully, and I find the combination of the two especially powerful. I think we are all called to bring out the best in others, to build them up, to help them become all they can be. Certainly we are required first and foremost to do this for our spouse, then our children, and on out. If we are not actively building up our spouse, something is very wrong, and it needs to be deal with ASAP.
One thing that can be wrong is a lack of “self-love”. I know some in the church have taken humility and not having pride to an extreme that makes the words “self-love” seem like heresy, but that’s not what God intended. Jesus told us to love our neighbours as ourselves – if we don’t love and care for ourselves, we won’t do a very good job of loving others. Sure, we can go too far and become selfish, but without a certain level of self-love and self-care we are of no long-term use to anyone else.
Tech bonus: If you run more than one computer on your desk, I have a program that will make your life so much easier. (See Mac and mixed platforms below.) Mouse Without Boarders installs on two to four PCs and used the local network to share a single mouse and keyboard with all the systems. Your mouse moves off the screen of one computer and onto the screen of the next. Works even if you have multiple screens on one of the systems. In addition to this, it allows you to share copy and paste across systems, drag files from one PC to another, and to lock all the systems at once.
For Mac, try Teleport – shared mouse and keyboard, as well as synchronized pasteboard and file drag and drop.
For Linux, or to use across platforms, there is Synergy – shared mouse, keyboard and copy and paste.
