More of This and Less of That

Most marriages I know could use more hugs. And some desperately need more hugs!

A couple hugging.

What’s more, most marriages I know would benefit from less criticism. And some won’t survive without less criticism.

So why not commit to more hugging, and less criticising?

More Cuddling Could Improve Your Marriage and Sex Life

So some researchers decided to find out how more cuddling would affect married couples. A group was asked to spend more time cuddling through some combination of cuddling more often and doing it for longer periods. Two other groups were asked to spend more time together at meals, and to make no changes, as control groups.

Couple cuddling in bed

The more cuddling group reported greater relationship satisfaction and less interest in other people after four weeks. Cuddling was defined as intimate, physical, and loving contact with some degree of whole body touching that doesn’t involve sexual behaviour.

The study also mentioned that previous research had shown that post intercourse affection, including cuddling, was associated with greater relationship satisfaction and sexual satisfaction.

So if you want to improve your marriage, do more cuddling. If you want to improve your marriage and your sex life, do more cuddling after sex.

Friday Flashback: The Powerful Sexual Effect of Non-Sexual Touch on Your Wife

This is one of the most significant and potentially marriage-changing posts I’ve ever done. It’s simple, it’s easy, and it can have a massive effect on your wife, your marriage, and your sex life. Please take this seriously, and give it a real try.

I’ve often said non-sexual touch is necessary for a woman to want and enjoy sexual touch, and now I have a survey supporting my claim. The survey isn’t perfect – it would have been good to have an, “I don’t want more touch” choice. So this applies to women who want more touch, which other surveys have shown to be true for most wives.

Wife excited her husband is about to touch her.

Question: Women – other than sexual contact, what physical touch would you like more of from your husband?

Touching me as he walks past 75.7%
His arm around me 56.8%
Many kisses during the day 43.2%
Shoulder rubs 43.2%
Snuggling laying down 43.2%
Holding hands 40.5%
Back rubs 37.8%
Some very long kisses 37.8%
Snuggling sitting down 37.8%
Full body massage 35.1%
More hugs 35.1%
Laying on him while we watch TV 35.1%
Some very long hugs 35.1%
Sitting closer (on the couch, at a restaurant …) 29.7%
Foot rubs 27.0%
Wrestling 13.5%
Sitting in his lap 10.8%

  • What jumps out on this is that three-fourths of women said a touch as hubby walked past was something they desire. This is not a difficult thing; it takes almost no effort and only seconds to do. A brief touch on the arm, a passing grasp of her hand, or a pat on the butt if it’s okay with her. Simple, easy, and powerful. Doing this a number of times a day tells her you are always aware of her, always thinking of her, and always desiring intimacy with her. Most women are desperate to feel that way about their husband!
  • Second, at more than half, was his arm around her. Be it while walking or sitting, this is a powerful form of touch for a woman. I suspect there’s a safe and protected aspect to this form of touch. Additionally, this shows the world you love her, and it makes her feel especially good in public because it tells her you’re not ashamed of loving her in front of others.
  • A little less than half the ladies cited kissing during the day (as opposed to as foreplay). Trust me on this; it’s almost impossible to kiss your wife more than she wants. You can even throw in some heavy kissing and a bit of gentle groping on occasion if you do plenty of kissing. “Some very long kisses” was mentioned by over a third of the women, so some are specifically looking for more than a peck!
  • Most of the rest of the options were all chosen by roughly one-third of the women. I think this shows individuality, and means you need to do some trial and error to find what your wife wants and enjoys the most. “Sitting in his lap” was picked by only one woman in ten, but for some of those it may be a huge thing, and maybe a turn-on as well.
  • The responses on massage are interesting; with shoulder rub being highest rated, then full body massage, back rub, and finally foot rub. Again, this shows preferences. Some women probably selected all four, while others only wanted one. Shoulders are a good choice because it releases pain and stress and is intimate without being in your face sexual. In the second section, one lady commented, “Foot-rubs = Foreplay…..I just can’t get him to realize it! :)” – take a lesson, men!

Question: Women: How do you think more non-sexual touch would affect your interest in sex?

I would feel less used 36.4%
I think I would be open to more sex 33.3%
I think I would want more sex 30.3%
I think I would want a lot more sex 30.3%
I think I would enjoy sex a lot more 30.3%
I think I would enjoy sex more 21.2%
I think I would be open to a lot more sex 15.2%
No change 3.0%

Only 3% of women said more touch would not change her sexually! All the rest said they thought more touch would result in wanting or enjoying sex more.

  • Forty-eight percent of the women thought they would be more open to sex or a lot more sex.
  • Sixty percent, said more touch would cause them to want more sex or a lot more sex. Non-sexual touch is clearly a great way to increase sex in a marriage!
  • Just over half of the women said more touch would result in them enjoying sex more or a lot more. This may not make sense to those of us with male minds, but clearly half the women think more non-sexual touch means enjoying sexual touch more.
  • The most picked answer, chosen by over a third, was “I would feel less used”. If a man only touches his wife when he’s having or seeking sex, is it any wonder she feels sex is all he wants? This is one of those places where actions speak far louder than words!

The bottom line is, non-sexual touch has a powerful effect on a woman sexually. However, many men avoid non-sexual touch when we feel sexually starved. Now that you know, what are you going to do about it? BTW, if she’s been touch starved for years, it’s going to take time for more non-sexual touch to have a noticeable effect on her.

Give Your Wife a Massage for No Reason

It’s been a while since I encouraged you to massage your wife. Her hands, feet, shoulders, back, butt, legs, whatever. Just rub her!

Attentive husband is doing foot massage for wife on couch.

If you have learned where she carries tension, work on that. Learn what muscles get sore, and how to make them feel better. Also learn how to do a light massage that brings pleasure and relaxes without any discomfort.

If sex is a problem area for you two, keep your massage away from where you really want to touch her. Giving her touch with no sexual strings is a loving choice.

Flashback Friday: Non-Sexual Touch

Most of us have figured out that something called “non-sexual touch” is important to our wife. What is less clear to most is just what “non-sexual” means.

Clearly, certain parts of her body are sexual, and any touching of those parts could be seen as sexual, but it’s not that easy. As best as I can tell, non-sexual is far more about what she is thinking, and what she thinks you are thinking, than what and how you touch. If your touch is a prelude to sex, or an invitation to sex, or a request for sex, or a protest of how long it’s been since you’ve had sex, then it’s sexual touch. And if you have even a hint of an erection… On the other hand, if you don’t seem to be looking for sex, anything short of foreplay can be seen as non-sexual.

Couple laying in bed hugging each other.

Perception is a major factor here, and that makes this a difficult issue. For most men, most touch is potentially sexual, and the longer it’s been since having sex, the truer this is. Most of us can reach the place where being in the same room is sexual, and that makes it impossible for us to offer “non-sexual” touch.

Probably the best way to deal with this is to be honest. Explain to her that sometimes just being with her is sexual, and there is no way you can turn that off. However, you’re willing to choose to set it aside when that is what she needs. That means you touch her in ways she wants and ignore the fact that how you’re touching her is arousing you. Yes, I know this is not easy – it’s a sacrifice you make for her. Hopefully she will understand and appreciate it. And maybe it will encourage her to sacrifice a bit more for you.

Hug It Better

Remember when your kid’s minor injuries could be fixed by “kissing it better”? And disappointment and fear could be fixed with a hug. The power behind those things was you letting the child know you loved and cared for them.

Man hugging his wife.

This power works for adults too, and it’s especially good with your wife. A hug won’t change or fix anything, but it will make her feel better to know you love and care for her.

The Gift of Human Touch

This is not a marriage post, but it is something you should discuss with your wife before you implement it.

As background, I grew up in the South where hugging is a big deal. Some men hugged me, as did many women. Some wanted the A-frame hug, others were less picky. I have no problem with hugging. Then I moved to an area where hugging is less common. I’ve heard “I’m not a hugger” more than once. I also saw a guy say that to a woman who said “I am” as she wrapped her arms around him!

Woman trying to hug a man who doesn't want to hug.

The other day we were at a gathering where there was a woman I know fairly well. She is more or less my age and divorced for a number of years. As we left I went up behind her and gave her a hands-on-her-shoulders hug. She practically melted and gave a sound of approval. I did this because I realised she has very little human touch in her life. I have no idea what level of hugging she would be comfortable with from me, but what I did was good. It took me five seconds to bless her.

Some folks have very little touch in their life. This is particularly true for older folks, but it can also be a problem for singles of any age. Human contact in the form of touching is important and not getting it hurts people.

How could you and your wife provide some small measure of this for the folks in your life who need it? A hug, a hand on the shoulder, holding their hand while you pray for them, or offering a hand up out of a chair are some of the ways to do this.

Doing this requires that you and your wife trust each other. Beyond that, who and how can be tricky. If you’re a young man then hugging young or middle age women is iffy. If you look like a grandpa, it’s safer. You also need to be able to tell if what you do is well-received or makes the other person uncomfortable.

Some will suggest this is dangerous as it could lead to temptation. And some will worry about how others will react. Jesus was multiple times guilty of culturally inappropriate contact with women and it was called out more than once. So yeah, if we do likewise we might get some grief. But if we, like Jesus, are seeking to provide human contact to those who need it, then what others think isn’t important. As long as your wife is okay with it, go for it.

If this post makes you uncomfortable or sounds dead wrong, feel free to kick it around in the comments.
