FF: Applying the S-Curve Model to Strengthen Your Marriage

Whitney Johnson, a Harvard Business Review blogger, has some interesting ideas I think apply to marriage nicely. In Throw Your Life a Curve Johnson talks about the S curve model for understanding how we learn new things.

S curve model

You start to do something new to improve some aspect of your marriage, or just to make your wife happier. This could be a change of habit, trying to listen better, a new approach to sex, whatever. You start at the lower left of the curve, in the yellow area of the chart above. You are unsure how it’s going to work or exactly what to do. After you struggle for a while, you get the hang of it, and you start to improve rapidly. You get positive feedback from your bride because she is seeing the rapid change; this is the green area. Finally, you have almost mastered what you’re doing, which means there’s not much room to grow or improve. Your wife may stop bragging on you; you may start doing whatever out of habit without much thought, or you may get bored with it. This is the red area.

Each phase has dangers:

  • YELLOW: The danger here is giving up. This is the most frustrating part of doing something new. There is little growth, plenty of failure, and little or no recognition of what you’re trying to do. The important thing here is to just keep going.
  • GREEN: The greatest danger here is getting a big head. Don’t let your success or her praise cause you to slack off here or in other areas. You need to add this to the other ways you meet her wants and needs. Another danger is thinking that you’re owed something (see Say no to Quid Pro Quo).
  • RED: One danger here is backing off just before you master whatever it is you’re doing. Another danger is slipping into autopilot, which means you won’t do as good a job. You might also get so bored you stop doing it, do it less often, or don’t keep doing it as well.

Do you see any of this in your past when you tried to improve your marriage? Do you tend to drop out in the yellow zone? Do you think too much of yourself in the green zone, or think she owes you? Do you get to the red zone and drop what you are doing to start a new curve?

Valentine’s Day: Navigating Love and Expectation

Here it comes again, guys, that day known as Valentine’s Day.

Dislike it, hate it, or fear it, it’s a fact of life. You can’t run from it, and ignoring it is not a good plan.

A man going all out for Valentine's Day.

I know some of you fear you can’t get it right, and some of you know from experience that you can’t. But that doesn’t mean you should do nothing. Make a reasonable loving gesture, because it’s the right and loving thing to do.

BTW, expecting sex on V-day when it’s never happened in the past is setting yourself up for disappointment and your marriage for frustration. If you want to be proactive, tell her you think it should be a sex free day. What’s the worst that could happen?

A Gift She Really Wants

Would you like to give your wife a gift she really wants? A gift she will cherish for years to come? How about making a permanent change you know she wants? It might be no longer doing or saying something she dislikes. Or it could be starting to do something she has indicated she’d like you to do.

A gift tag that reads "How would you like me to change?"

I know changes like this aren’t easy. The question you have to ask yourself is if you think she’s worth it. If she is, do whatever it takes to make the change, and to stick to it.

If you have a good idea what change she would like, I think the best option is to do it without saying anything. Let her figure it out; let her ask you about it when she sees the results.

If you have no idea what she would like you to change, you could ask her. If you think that would end badly, the list below is from answers 174 women gave when asked what one change they would like their husband to give them as a Christmas gift.

  • Help out: Preferably without being asked. If you’re not sure, ask what you can do. Oh, and please pick up after yourself!
  • Communication: She would like your attention when she is talking with you. Better communication skills and less harshness were also requested by a number of women.
  • Anger and lack of patience were mentioned by a number of respondents.
  • Plenty of wives want more time with hubby, and the majority of them complained about the amount of time he spent on video games, television, and the Internet. Don’t get so into your technology you ignore your wife!
  • Some were concerned about hubby and the kids. A few wanted more help, but most were more concerned about him spending time with the children. Several mentioned wanting him to be a better example and spiritual leader.
  • Integrity was mentioned by a number of women. A couple specifically mentioned lying, but most said they want him to “do what he says he will” and “finish what he starts”.
  • Health issues: Weight, smoking, exercise, drinking, and drugs were all concerns.
  • Sex. Yes, some want better sex. A couple want more, but the bigger issue is showing desire for HER rather than for sex.
  • Also, when you do have sex, be sure to give her pleasure.
  • Personal hygiene: Brush, floss, and showering regularly would be appreciated by a number of the ladies.
  • Stop lusting after other women. Yup, they see you doing it.

Improve Your Marriage One Small Act at a Time

What might happen if you made a point of doing one small act of kindness for your wife every day?

A man offering his wife a cup of tea

Some might be so small they don’t register with her, but they will add up. She will feel better loved and more accepted. She may not know why she feels that way, but it doesn’t matter as long as she feels it.

Understanding and Supporting Your Wife When She Cries

As my wife and I were talking with our 33-year-old son yesterday, he said, “When your wife is crying, you should listen to her.” And Lori said to me, “You need to write a post about that.”

So, here we are.

A man comforting his crying wife

Some men are unnerved by crying. We don’t do it, or do it and feel bad about doing it. We don’t really understand it, and sometimes we think she may be doing it intentionally to gain advantage or manipulate us. In truth, crying is a natural function, and women are just less repressed about showing tears.

I suggest you consider tears as God’s way of underlining what your wife is saying. It’s a flag showing what she is saying is important to her. So listen up. Don’t be quick to try to fix it, and don’t try to downplay it. Whatever brought on the tears is a big deal to your wife.

And yes, her menstrual cycle can be a factor. But she’s not crying because of the time of the month. She is crying because something is bothering her. She may cry more easily or harder because of her current hormones, but the underlying issue is still something that matters to her. And if it matters to her, it should matter to you!

Embracing Your Wife’s Uniqueness: Key to a Stronger Marriage

I remind you from time to time that your wife is unique. The better you understand this, the better your marriage will be.

A woman on a skateboard wearing a tutu and holding a tennis racquet

This week, make a point of seeing who your wife is, where she’s not like you, and where she’s not like other women.

A note to those of you who read by e-mail: The system stopped sending mail last week. Sorry about that, fixed now. One of the things you missed is that Lori and I have joined the Aldrich Ministries Coaching Network. If you’re looking for marriage coaching, check them out.

Physicals: A Life-Saving Act of Love for Your Marriage

The last couple of weeks, Lori and I have both done what we affectionately call “The Butt Cam”. Also called a colonoscopy by some.

Not my favourite way to spend a few hours, but it’s really an amazing thing that they can remove precancerous polyps and keep you from getting one of the most common, and deadliest cancers we face.

A man drifting off before a colonoscopy

A lot of men ignore doctors. When we’re young, we can more or less get away with that, but as we get older, an annual physical can save your life. Or keep you from pain or disability. In addition to finding problems, an annual physical sets a baseline for your body that could be helpful later.

The current guidelines call for a man to have a physical every five years under the age of fifty, and yearly after that. I’ve mentioned before that an annual physical when I was 58 found a condition that would have done significant harm to me before I had any symptoms.

This is a marriage issue because it’s rude to die on your wife when you could easily have avoided it. So man up and do it!

Understanding and Meeting Each Other’s Marriage Needs

On Monday, I started a discussion abut needs with the woman on The XY Code. I framed it with a definition of need from Wikipedia that I modified for marriage:

A need is something required for a safe, stable and healthy marriage.

What do you need for a healthy marriage? Most men put sex near the top of the list. That’s valid, but what else do you need? You need to feel respected. You need non-sexual intimacy, both physical and emotional. You need to do things you enjoy as a couple. If you had all the sex you could handle, and were missing some of those other things, you wouldn’t have a happy, healthy marriage. As great and important as sex is, it will never take the place of all the other things you need.

A woman making a list

What your wife needs for a stable and healthy marriage is actually very similar to what you need. The difference is what is at the top of her list. And just as some things further down your list don’t seem to matter when sex is lacking, what’s lower on her list doesn’t do much for her when the things at the top are lacking. Or non-existent. And for many women, sex is that way. Without good communication and feeling loved, sex with you doesn’t appeal to her.

If you want a good marriage, you must figure out what your wife needs for a good marriage, and then provide her with those things. As you start to give her the things on the top of her list, other needs will show up. And yes, that may well include sex.
