Lori and I recently saw a woman at Costco who was struggling. Her husband was doing nothing to help her. I suspect he was embarrassed by her difficulties, and was trying to distance himself.
I can recall feeling embarrassed by my high school girlfriend. I made some unloving choices because of that. That was far less common with Lori, and I’ve not felt it in a long time.

None of that, including why it’s gotten better, is about my girlfriend or Lori. It was better with Lori because I’d done a good deal of growing up between 18 and 23. It stopped being an issue all together because I got mature enough to stop doing stupid things because of what my lady did or said.
Looking back, much of what the girlfriend did that embarrassed me was unacceptable. This was rarely, if ever, the case with Lori. But 100% of my unloving actions because of my embarrassment was about me. It was about my pride and fear. I was more concerned with how others saw me than with my wife’s struggles and needs. It was small, and it was selfish.
If any of this strikes a chord with you, give it some thoughtful prayer.
