FF: If You Had More Time: Uncovering Desires and Making Room for Dreams

Most of us daydream about what we would do if we won or inherited a great deal of money. What if someone could give you more time? What if you suddenly had 28 hour days – an extra four hours a day with nothing you had to do? How would you spend the extra time? Think about it seriously for a bit, what would you do? Would you learn a new language or learn to play an instrument? Would you write a book, or get a degree? Might you spend more time with your wife, or with your children? Would you give time to your church or some charity?

How you would spend “extra” time says something about your dreams and desires. Maybe some of those things are important; maybe you need to find a way to do some of those things in the 24 hours a day you have. How could you do it without failing to do what you need to do, and without reducing the amount of margin in your life? What could you cut back or cut out to make the time necessary to live your dreams and fulfil your desires?

Want to get serious about this? Discuss it with your wife. Talk about what each of you would do with extra time, then decide which of those you really want to accomplish. Support her in her desires, and help her to make the time to live her dreams. Ask her to do the same for you.

Knowing how my wife and I fill the hours we have, I find that I feel exhausted and a little depressed at the thought of four more hours. I know that, as things are now, we would almost certainly just do more to exhaust ourselves, her most of all.

I know. Margin. I’m working on that. I’m just not there…yet. I can’t really do anything to work on her margin and she doesn’t see it as more important than the things that fill her margin. I do understand her perspective though I know it isn’t healthy to actually live that way. Right now, four more hours would be a bad thing for us. Though I do have some ideas of what I would like to do, if I had them…

If there were 4 more hours in the day I would just end up grinding myself up for 4 more hours. There is always something else that needs doing. Someone asked me recently when I planned to retire as they were planning to go at 58. I said not sure probably 65 to 67. Not sure what I would do if retired . At least at work people appreciate what I do. I don’t need to have a ever bigger list of things to do and not feel appreciated and not paid to do them. I never actually planned to retire just figure I’d work till I died. My body will be all used up by then anyway.
