I read somewhere that our most common approach to fixing things is to add something. We “default to addition rather than subtraction when it comes to finding solutions.” This tendency has been seen in everything from engineering to cooking. It can also be found in parenting and how we deal with marriage problems.

If the best solution is to remove something, or do less, than adding is more than a failure; it could make things worse!
The idea of margin is certainly part of this. But it’s a bigger picture. For example, if you’ve said something that upset your wife, more words might not help, no matter what you say. You can’t remove words, but not adding might be the best choice.
