Step Up to the Stove: Easy Meals When Your Wife Needs a Break

If your wife does most or all of the cooking, that can be a strain on her at times. When she’s busy, stressed, or sick, be ready to jump in and feed the family.

Plate of spaghetti and meatballs.

The trick here is coming up with a tasty, healthy meal that you can produce on command. That means it has to be things that store well for a good while. There are some great frozen entrées (check Costco), but you can probably do better. Spaghetti is easy. Get a jar or two of good sauce, have noodles, and keep some frozen meatballs in the back of the freezer. A frozen vegetable medley is also beginner level, and you can keep it around easily. French bread is a nice touch, and again you can find frozen heat-and-eat versions. You should be able to pull the whole meal together in half an hour…

And of course, then you do all the clean-up, because you’re a generous husband!

Good advice. Sundays when we eat at my parents are usually the only time she yields the kitchen but part of that is also about timing. Yes, it is one nice thing she knows she can do to help me a bit more feel loved and welcome when I come home from work, so she is usually pretty determined to check that box so she can keep the 50% of our marriage score card that isn’t sex as high as possible (to reference another post I recently read). I do appreciate that. I’ll take what I can get for this season and bless her for it.

Schedule is the other issue during the week, as I mentioned. I’m usually at work until supper time. Sometimes I have to work a bit later so I can leave earlier on a different day to attend a school function for the kids or something. Unfortunately, that means I’m not usually home early enough to be part of preparing supper.

Of course, there’s also the fact that our kitchen is small and she frequently sends me to do something else so she can get the prep done faster and easier. Seems to think I’m in her way. 😆

I can do better than spaghetti, though, on a normal day. My mom did teach me to cook and bake from an early age, though I am not as quick or accomplished as either my mom or my wife. I actually kind of enjoyed cooking and really enjoy baking (clean up is just part of it). I just wish our observed day of rest wasn’t the one day I got to cook for her. I try to keep it’s simple and easy clean up as I can manage for Sunday.

I do most of the cooking in our house. I am also a much better cook than my wife and able to do well at a wide variety of cooking styles. She when she does cook likely will limit what she is cooking to 5 ingredients or less. She hates when there is to many things going into a dish. I will make pizza from scratch and am building a wood fired brick oven for better pizza and anything else. I also wash the dishes after cooking as she complained that I use to many dishes. I also look through Pinterest to find new and healthy meals because she gets bored with what we are having regularly. I also plan the week and go to the grocery store and buy everything and put it away when I get home. I am also responsible for all outside work and fixing or building anything she comes up with. I also try to help with the house work but she works from home 30 hrs a week and I am sometimes gone for 12hr or more per day. There was a time when I was working 14hrs a day and when I got home I still had to make us all dinner and clean up.

You, sir, are a marvel. My wife and I would both love for me to be able to do what you describe. My hat is off to you. 🎩

Payday I taught myself how to cook over the years. I like to eat and I am to cheap to go out very often so if I wanted good food I had to learn how to make it myself. First I learned how to grill everything. After that I was out of work and needed something to occupie my time so I took a cake decorating set of classes. I got pretty good at making fondant cakes and sold a few. After that I got into bread baking and it was a short hop to pizza after that. I have had several people tell me that I made the best pizza they ever had. I won 2 cooking contests 1st place best of show and a 2nd place. When my wife decided we needed to move I lost my pizza oven 😒 I was buried under a new pile of house work redoing the entire place and dealing with a addition that didn’t go smoothly and she took it all out on me. I lost my drive to cook good food and that season of my life nearly killed me. I started 3 weeks ago building a new wood fired brick oven so I can start doing what I love again. During covid it really hurt me not having that outlet.
