Breaking Habits and Choosing Kindness in How We Speak

In a recent post, my wife said:

My general thought, however, is that how we speak is our choice, regardless of how others act or speak.

I would really like that to not be true. But I do agree with her.

The issue is, for some of us, that choice is not a today thing. It was made a long time ago, and it has been cemented in place by years or decades of habit. So today we say certain things so fast there is no time to choose. Or we react to certain situations with verbiage that is on speed dial. So it’s still a choice, but it’s not something we can easily choose to not do.

If you’re in this place, you can change. It will be slow-going, and you will fail repeatedly, but if you keep working on it, you will get there. The world would benefit from all of us being kinder with our words. And your marriage will certainly benefit from fewer harsh words and more words of kindness, affirmation, and adoration.
