We live on a more or less flat area up a mountain. Our road in is windy and gains a lot of elevation quickly.
The other day as we were going out, we came upon a car with a big Christmas tree on top – with one strap holding it on. She was moving slowly, and I pulled over to get ahead of her before we hit the hill. The driver responded by moving to the centre of the road and staying there till it was no longer possible to pass. So we followed her for miles, at about a quarter of the speed limit. Letting me pass would have cost her nothing and would not have hurt her. But I’d guess in her mind it would cost her or hurt her.

I’m seeing a lot more of this kind of selfishness. Twenty years ago, she would have pulled over to make it easy for me to pass. A decade ago, she wouldn’t have prevented me from passing. Today, she feels a need to be in control or to limit me. Why the change?
Lori and I have been watching an FBI show where someone posited that, among other things, criminals react to how sane or crazy the society they live in is. I think the same is true for people in general. Like the rest of us, Mrs. Christmas tree lives in a crazy world. And that is negatively affecting how she acts.
So what does all this have to do with marriage? As I poked along behind the women, hoping her tree would not fall off onto the road, I wondered how she treats her husband and children. I’m sure she makes an effort to be decent, but what I got from her is who she is. And when she is tired, stressed, or upset, that is going to come out at home.
All of this is the long way round to ask you to be aware of how the surrounding crazy can cause you to be less loving, more selfish, and sometimes hurtful to those you care about. Please don’t make your wife pay for the insanity all around us.
