Applying the Golden Rule in Marriage

This is the second part in the What Jesus Said About Being a Good Husband series.

I want to discuss The Golden Rule because it’s not as simple as it looks, particularly in marriage.

So whatever you wish that others would do to you, do also to them, for this is the Law and the Prophets. ~ Matthew 7:12 ESV

The word "Rule" in gold text

Most of you wish your wife would wake you up with oral sex. And most of you long ago came to understand that doing this for your wife is an exceptionally bad idea. Many of you think season tickets to your favourite sports team would be a fantastic gift, but far fewer wives would see it as such.

We have both gender differences and differences in personality that play into this. I’m good with less than an hour at a bookstore; my wife can do multiple hours. Brining my wife a sweater or afghan when it’s just under seventy in the house blesses her, but I have no interest in such things at that temperature.

When Jesus gave us the Golden Rule, He was talking about concepts, not specifics. Give, love, be kind, and so on. How we do that depends on what the other person wants, needs, and enjoys.

What does your wife wish you would do for her or do more often?

The NET Bible translation is helpful here:
In everything, treat others as you would want them to treat you, for this fulfills the law and the prophets.

If you would want someone else to try to understand your wishes and respect your preferences, you should treat them the same way.
