The next few Thursdays, I’m going to share what Jesus told us about being a good husband. You may be thinking, “Jesus didn’t say that much about this issue”. While Jesus didn’t give us guidelines specifically for marriage, He did give us a great deal of “advice” for how to live and how to treat others. Certainly these things apply to our wife, don’t they?
And yet, many followers of Jesus don’t do very well at applying Jesus’ words to their marriages.
I do get it. Jesus set a very high standard. Loving people the way He commands us to is difficult, and it can be costly. And the closer people are to us, the more difficult it can be if they’re not making it easy to love them. But if we can’t practice our Christianity at home, then we have failed.

I realise this is going to be difficult for some of you. I’ve been working at this for years, and it’s not always been easy for me. Sure, when I’m feeling good and Lori is being sweet, it’s a breeze. But if I’m tired, or she is being less than perfect, it’s not as easy. And if I’m not doing well, and she’s also having a difficult time, I often blow it.
I ran a sneak preview of applying what Jesus said to our marriages on Tuesday with my Judge Actions, Not People post. Most of what I will do on this will apply equally to both husbands and wives, so you women reading along here aren’t off the hook. That said, if you’re a complementarian, I think as servant leaders there is an extra burden on us to lead by example in this.
I hope this series is as convicting for you as I know it will be for me!
