Love and Seeing The Future

Lori and I joined a marriage group that was going to go through Timothy Keller’s The Meaning of Marriage: Facing the Complexities of Commitment with the Wisdom of God. Something jumped out at me as I listened to last week’s chapter:

Within this Christian vision of marriage, here’s what it means to fall in love. It is to look at another person and get a glimpse of what God is creating, and to say, “I see who God is making you, and it excites me! I want to be part of that. I want to partner with you and God in the journey you are taking to his throne.” ~ Timothy Keller

That is how I felt about Lori, and why I wanted to marry her.

Brunette woman holding a sign that says "Work in progress".

The funny part of the story is Lori said no the first time I asked her to be my wife. I knew she was into me, so I was confused. She said she was a mess, and she didn’t want to hurt me. But I saw who God was making her. I wanted to be part of her becoming that woman, and I very much wanted that woman as my wife.

I think this is why I survived the difficult years. I had signed on for a work in progress, and I had seen a glimpse of what was to be. I was in it for the long game, and that made it so much easier to deal with the current mess.

Do you know who God is making your wife into? Does it excite you? Are you all about being part of that?
