Going Beyond “Punching the Clock” in Your Marriage

If you search for how folks explain the phrase “punching the clock” you find things like “used to describe a job that involves a more physical than emotional presence” and “counting down the hours until you can leave work for more enjoyable activities”. It’s been a long time since I had a punch the clock job, and I certainly don’t miss it.

With that in mind, let me ask you a question – are you every guilty of punching the clock in your marriage? Men get rightly upset when they think their wife does that with sex, but the sad reality is men do the same over various things.

I realise those places where you’re tempted to punch the clock seem far less important than sex, but what if those things are really important to your wife? What if she can tell you’re counting the minutes till you can stop doing what she wants and go do something you find more enjoyable? What is she knows when you’re physically present, but not really there mentally or emotionally? How do you think that makes her feel about you? How does it make her feel about your marriage?

The Bible admonishes us about this, saying:

Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men, knowing that from the Lord you will receive the inheritance as your reward. You are serving the Lord Christ. ~ Colossians 3:23-24 ESV

If you applied this to the things you do with your wife, do you think it would bless her? Might it result in a positive change in your marriage?

Ouch. I do try. I often feel like we both do this in many things besides just sex and I deliberately try to be present in the moment for her. I certainly don’t have it down yet
