A couples times a year, the three men on our ten acres drop trees. Aside from providing fire wood for my son and trees for our mill, we do this to remove trees in danger of falling on something, and dead trees that could become flaming horrors if we have a fire.
If you’ve ever done much of this, you know it’s seriously hard work. It’s the hardest thing I do physically. As we are down to one chainsaw and the other two guys are both better with it, I was doing limbing with an axe, moving the good wood to a pile, and throwing everything else on a slash pile.

At 62, I can’t do this as fast as I did a decade ago. I took more breaks than I would in the past, and got less done. But I was still a help. And I will keep being a part of “logging day” as long as I am a help.
However, I have decided to respect my ageing body and not do stupid things to it. Years ago, I had a friend in his fifties who was always trying to keep up physically with his twenty-year-old son. Needless to say, he sometimes put himself in a lot of pain, and sometimes ended up at the doctor. I always attributed it to pride, but it could have been not dealing with reality. Whatever it was, I found it unwise and decided I would never be that way. And I’ve done a good job sticking to that.
So yeah, I was tired and unable to do much of anything once we finished logging, but I was not in a lot of pain. And the next morning I was able to get out of bed and had good energy. Another win!
If age is starting to catch up with you, are you admitting that to yourself and making wise choices and changes?

As someone a few years behind you, I can still do MOST of what I did when I was 20 something. But recovery takes longer. Especially if I get injured.
It’s a delicate balance between use it or lose it, and don’t overdo it.
@Tony – Yeah, recovery is the issue!
