Respectful Humour and Protecting Intimacy in Marriage

Lori and I had a friend who often said, “It doesn’t matter who the joke is on, as long as everyone laughs.” In practice, he pretty much always made himself the butt of the joke.

I liked his “It doesn’t matter line”. Also, I liked that he primarily picked on himself. And I can’t recall his wife ever being the butt of his jokes.

Wife can't belive the joke her husband just made about her.

There are places where my wife gets special treatment and privileges. This is one of them. I may tell a funny story about her, but only if I am absolutely sure it won’t hurt or embarrass her. I don’t play loose and free with her feelings.

Where does your wife get special treatment and privileges? Are there places where you should be doing this but aren’t? Might your relationship with her improve if you changed?

On a related issue, be extremely careful what you say about your wife sexually. If she feels you’re exposing her sexuality to others, she won’t be motivated to expose herself to you!
