When I asked ChatGPT to suggest a dozen article topics for making a heterosexual man a better husband, one was “How to Prioritize Quality Time with Your Spouse”.
If you have followed me very long, you know I get twitchy about the phrase quality time. I think it’s vital for a good marriage, but I fear many of us have been sold a lie about what it is.

First we need to qualify the qualifier, the word quality. (Say that three times fast!) Watching TV together is not quality time. Neither is laying in bed together reading. For it to be quality, there needs to be interaction. That could be words or touch, or both. Or it could be enjoying beauty together, such as going to an art show, watching the sunset, or sitting on the beach.
Second, you can’t schedule occasional quality time and be done. Would you be happy with mind-blowing sex once a month and nothing else? What about a single incredible seven-course meal once a week? If it’s not enough, a taste just makes you more aware that you’re not getting enough.
So props to the AI for putting the word prioritise in there. If you’re not intentional, it won’t happen enough to matter. And that’s bad for you, your wife, and your marriage.
