This is another post about ChatGPT’s suggested topics for making a heterosexual man a better husband. Today, “Creating Shared Goals and Dreams with Your Wife” and “Navigating Life Transitions Together: Strategies for a Stronger Marriage”.
There is no marriage map that shows you how to navigate decades of life together. Some enter into marriage with no real idea where it will take them. Others have a plan, and as the Yiddish maxim says, “Man Plans, God Laughs.”
Aside from unexpected events, both good and bad, that change our path, our hopes, dreams, and desires mature and change over the years.

I’m a big fan of sharing your dreams with each other. Lori and I have discussed a great many dreams over the years. The majority never came to pass, but sharing and discussing those dreams helped us learn about each other and grow as a couple. When a dream has been important to one or both of us, we have worked together to make it happen. Or to do something similar.
As for shared dreams and goals, I don’t see that as just the things we both want. If something really matters to my wife, it needs to be a shared goal, even if I have no personal desire for it.
Navigating transitions and challenges together is critical to keeping your marriage healthy. My pastor is found of saying, “blessed are the flexible, for they shall not be broken”, and this is a great marriage truth. Life happens, and things beyond your control will drive you crazy if you’re not careful. I’m all for pushing hard for plan A, but you must know when to switch to plan B. Or C, D, E…
Learn to see the detours and road blocks as part of life, and don’t blame each other. If your wife got cancer and that prevented something you had planned to do, you wouldn’t attack her for getting cancer, would you? And yet some people blame or punish their spouse for things that are beyond their control, or are inevitable because of choices made long ago. If you’re not in it together, us against the world, you will have problems.
