The Role of Gratitude in a Happy Marriage

One of ChatGPT’s suggestions for “making a heterosexual man a better husband” was “The role of gratitude in a happy marriage”.

As this is my 85th post under the gratitude category, I’m clearly in agreement with this.

Loving, devoted husband cuddling happy wife on couch.

I need to make a confession. In many areas of my life, I struggle to practice gratitude. I have a good life, and I think I’ve had less than my share of real problems. But due to childhood issues, I don’t see my life that way. I am hypersensitive to things that go wrong, and downplay the good. However, I’ve done a good job of gratitude in my marriage. My dear wife hears about my gratitude for who she is and what she does many times a week. It’s not forced, it just spills out because I feel it so profoundly.

Because I am working to feel and express gratitude in other areas of my life, I can relate if you don’t feel gratitude in your marriage and wonder how to change that. If you have a good marriage and a loving wife, examining your reality should help. When you see other couples going through struggles you don’t have, that can also help you focus on what you do have. If your marriage is not so great, there are still things you can be grateful for if you will look for them.

The big thing is expressing your gratitude. Share it with your wife, obviously. Also share it with friends. A few minutes each day telling God what you are grateful for would be a great idea. Then ask Him to make you aware of all the good things in your marriage.
