Communication is fundamental in marriage. If you don’t communicate well, you don’t know each other, and that limits intimacy and leads to problems.

The two sides of good communications are hearing what she says, and expressing well that you think and feel.

Hearing doesn’t mean being able to repeat the words she said, it means being able to share in your own words what she means. That can be challenging because there will be words you don’t define the same way, but neither of you may realise that. You don’t have to accept her definition of a word, and she doesn’t have to accept your definition, but you both need to understand how the other hears certain words.

Expressing yourself means being able to get her to understand your reality well. She may not understand it or question if it’s right, but if she knows how you really feel, you have communicated well.

I discussed apologies recently, saying you should if you think you did something wrong, but not if you don’t. The “art” of apologising requires fully owning your wrong or fault. Don’t try to blame your wife or someone else for your wrong choice. It may be valid to explain what pushed you towards the wrong choice, but doing that needs to be explaining your faults or fears, not shifting the blame in any way.

Your wife wants to know you in a deep, intimate way. Communication is the only way to make that happen. What’s more, it’s a never ending process because both of you are growing and changing. Talk is the lifeblood of marriage, don’t skimp!
