Who Is Speaking Into Your Life?

I recently saw an article entitled I’m a psychology expert in Finland, the No. 1 happiest country in the world—here are 3 things we never do. It’s worth a read, but I want to use the title to make a point. If you want to get better at something, you should learn from those who are doing that thing well.

When Lori and I were really struggling early in our marriage, we sought help from the church. The only couple who showed any interest in helping us was a couple who had a marriage we didn’t see as good or healthy. So we thanked them and moved on.

It seems obvious you don’t learn from those who are doing something poorly. But there is a more subtle version of this that we often miss. When you spend a lot of time with someone, you tend to mimic them. This is a form of learning, even if what you pick up is not something the other person does well.

This dynamic is especially an issue in a group. So, for example, if you hang with a group of guys who all bad mouth their wives, that is hurting your marriage. A group of friends can also drag you into questionable things or outright sin. Bad company does indeed ruin good morals.
