The Get Rich Quick Approach To Marriage

My wife has been talking to a young man who thinks he can make a lot of money raising quail. Lori has been raising them for food, and has learned a great deal about them. But as I hear her talking with this young fellow, I suspect he’s got the get rich quick bug.

I’m sure you know someone who always has a new scheme for becoming a millionaire in a very short time. Long term, most of these folks wind up with less money than they would have had they spent the same amount of time and effort getting an education and working hard at a job.

I’ve also seen men take this approach to a better marriage. Rather than doing the work needed to get there over time, they have one scheme after another that they think will give them a fantastic marriage in a very short time.

I get this because I was guilty of it at one point in our marriage. I realised I’d created problems that were hurting both of us, and I wanted to end them as fast as possible. The right way of doing that looked like it would take too long, so I went for the get fixed fast schemes that were never going to work. I suggested the same kind of things to Lori for some of her issues that were going to take a long time to resolve.

Aside from not working, these plans stole time and energy that could have been used to do it right, delaying actually fixing the issues.

It’s no fun to realise you’re going to have to live with whatever for the six, twelve, or eighteen months it is going to take to fix it. But four failed schemes and three months from now you will be no closer.
