Sex: Not As The World Does

The first of the year, I wrote a post entitled Marriage: Not As The World Does. I talked about being in but not of the world, and examined how that should play out in our marriages. Today, I want to apply the same idea to our sex lives. And it may not be what you expect!

The question "Does the Bible prohibit sexual pleasure?" on a banner in man's hands with blurred background.

God didn’t make us sexual beings just to ensure we had babies. If that were His goal, we would only desire sex when our wife was ovulating, or she would only be willing or able at that time. Furthermore, sex would be impossible during pregnancy and after menopause. And we would not be able to do so many wonderful things for each other with our hands, our mouths, and in other ways. If we apply intelligent design to sex, it’s obvious God wants us to have sex often and in a variety of ways.

God backs that idea with several verses in the Bible that tell us to have sex with the equivalent of drunken abandon. We’re also told to delight in our wife’s breasts, or more likely her nipples, all of our days.

Of course, there are limits. But those limits are few. If you don’t hurt each other and don’t involve anyone else (which includes porn) you can do pretty much anything you both enjoy. Those who want to put limits on married sex are following something other than the truth of God as revealed in His holy Word.

On the other hand, sex is not optional for married couples. What’s more, having sex infrequently is outside of God’s plan unless there is something keeping you from having sex regularly. And if some problem or issue is limiting sex, you need to be working to resolve it.

Finally, God is clear that we are to prefer others, and this is very much true in marriage. In sex, as the rest of marriage, that means you need to be all about your wife’s pleasure and enjoyment. Find out what make sex great for her, and do that. Find out what she needs beyond the bedroom to be open to sex, and do it.

Okay, now that you know, get naked and make God proud!
