Marriage: Not As The World Does

As followers of Jesus, we are called to be different. We do things God’s way, not the way of the world. We are called to be in the world so we can help and bless it, but we are admonished not to be of the world.

Have you ever thought about how that should play out in our marriages?

Wedding rings on a Bible

It should start before we marry. We should show respect and kindness to those we consider for our life partner and we should avoid sex. Few of us managed the second and if we’re honest, many of us failed at the first. So sadly, many marriages start out on the wrong path.

Marriage God’s way is about loving, caring for, and blessing another person as best we can. It’s about sacrifice and putting her needs, wants, and desires ahead of our own. It’s not that our needs are unimportant or should never be mentioned, but the balance is skewed towards our wife.

We live in a world full of “look out for number one“, “get yours“, and “do unto others before they do unto you“. Folks on social media upvote those who hurt or humiliate a spouse who doesn’t live up to the world’s standards and relationship books advocate manipulation in the name of getting what we want. A man who loves his wife as Christ would have us will be called a doormat, whipped, or beta.

As you think about who you want to be in 2023 please consider how the husband the world is trying to make you conflicts with the man God has called you to be. Then make course corrections as necessary.
