Cut It Down Before It Falls

The last month or so I saw a lot of trees being dropped around here. Some were just for wood, but many were close to a structure and dead, dying, or leaning. Falling trees are a big deal here; when fifty-plus feet of tree falls on a home or a car it does a lot of damage. When a tree is damaged or dead a bad storm or heavy snow can take it down. Or its roots can give way during mud season. Wise people keep an eye on their trees and remove them when they want, dropping them where they want, rather than waking up in the middle of the night with the tree pinning them to their beds!

A large tree fell on a small house caving in the roof and room under it.

In your marriage, there are, from time to time, things that are going to come crashing down at some point. A “storm” in the form of a big fight might take it down. Or perhaps a lack of time, intimacy, or sex causes it to fall. But even if none of that happens, eventually it will fall on its own. Usually, it happens at the worst possible time and makes a bad situation worse.

The wise choice is to keep your eye out for such things and take them down at a time and place of your choosing. I realise no one likes confrontation or being upset with their spouse, but putting off the inevitable almost certainly means it will happen at the worst possible time and make a bad situation worse.

If you think your wife can deal with it, mention the issue and arrange a time to deal with it. If saying anything will mean discussing it then and there, then pick your time and location wisely.
