Everyone Needs Advice For Something

I’ve been watching the slow-motion train wreck of Elon Musk trying to run Twitter.

Musk is unquestionably a very smart guy. As far as schooling he has Bachelor’s degrees in physics and economics. But he has taught himself a great deal about electric cars and rocket science. He is hands-on in his companies and reportedly spends far more time doing engineering than management.

However, he has no experience with social media other than using it. Had he been willing to ask for help from experts in the field, he wouldn’t be in the mess he’s in now.

The Bible verse “pride goes before the fall” comes to mind. We decide we’re smart enough to fake it and then we end up with a disaster.

Marriage is one place this happens and ends badly. None of us enters marriage with all the information we need to make it great. Some of us learned some good stuff from our parents growing up and some of us get some decent premarital counselling, but we still fall way short. Some folks manage, learning as they go. Some don’t.

Early in our marriage, Lori and I realised we needed help. We went looking and didn’t find it. In retrospect, we should have looked harder. We managed on our own, but it would have been far less painful and much faster had we gotten even a bit of help.

When your marriage hits a problem, don’t let your pride keep you from seeking help. Wise people know when they’re out of their depth and seek out experts. Proverbs has a not-so-nice word for those who don’t seek out help when they need it.

BTW, while books and blogs can sometimes give you what you need, there are times when they won’t cut it. Don’t just get help, get the help you need.
