Introverts Need Alone Time

I was listening to my wife and son, both introverts, talk about their need for quiet alone time. As an ambivert, I have to just accept their reality as valid.

There are exceptions, but in most marriages, one is an extrovert and the other an introvert. The extrovert, or ambivert, needs to understand the reality that introverts need quiet alone time to be mentally healthy.

My wife says I have learned to “fly under the radar”, meaning she can get what she needs and still be near me if I keep a lid on myself. If this were not true, I’d have to work harder than I do to give her alone time.

If your wife is an introvert, making sure she gets quiet alone time is critical for your marriage. It’s probably also necessary for a healthy sex life, now that I think about it. It’s not just a want on her part, it’s a need. If you love her, see it for the need it is and find ways to ensure she gets it.

If you’re the introvert, make a concerted effort to teach her that your need for quiet alone time is not about her. Tell her she will get more of you and a better you if she lets you have the time you need.
