It’s Time to Take Back the Holidays!

Do you always feel run over by the holidays come January? It’s run, rush, and hurry from Thanksgiving till January. When you do too much you don’t enjoy most of it. In addition to not getting to enjoy what you do, you don’t get to do some of what you usually do, such as spending time with your wife.

Perhaps most of what you do is good stuff you enjoy, there’s just way too much of it. Or maybe much of what you do is out of obligation and you would rather get a root canal. Either way, it’s a problem and you should deal with it.

May I suggest you take back the holidays this year? Decide the holidays are made for man, not man for the holidays. Set some hard limits and stick to them. Say no to far more than you say yes to, even though it’s going to upset some folks. Pick and choose carefully so you’ll have the time to enjoy what you do and still live your regular life during the holidays.

Every time I suggest this I get men saying they would love to do as I suggest, but their wife won’t go for it. I’m not one of those “the husband rules the home and what he says goes people“, but if you, your wife, or your kids are being hurt by doing too much then I think there is a headship issue here. Letting your wife hurt herself, your marriage, or the kids is a problem that you must address. Tell her your concerns. Make it clear this is not just about you, it’s about the whole family. Then talk about what you will and won’t do over the next ten weeks.

Being too busy isn’t just harmful, it’s wrong. We can’t focus on the reason for the season when we’re exhausted. How can our children learn the reason for the season if they run nonstop?

Don’t let family and friends ruin your holidays! Choose a few good things and skip the rest.

    We’ve just done this.

We sat our adult and nearly-adult kids down the other day and said – lets skip stressing over Christmas presents. Do NOT feel like you need to get us presents. If you find something you really want to give us, great. Otherwise, don’t feel like you have to. AND, we are probably not going to be getting you presents.

We are in a position to give them money, and so will almost certainly give each of them a check.

But, we’ve decided to get off the present giving bandwagon.

Of course, if we end up with grand-kids all bets are off.
