The last two days I’ve said what matters to you or your wife should matter to the other. In general, this should be true.
But what if something matters way too much to one of you? Maybe one of you is obsessive about something: such as her collection of throw pillows being so big you literally can’t find the bed or you spending every waking moment of the last ten weekends playing Call of Duty: Vanguard.

Obsession is bad for us and it can significantly hurt a marriage. True obsession needs to be addressed. If that can’t be done within the marriage then you need third-party help.
But what if it falls short of obsession? What if she wants the towels stacked just so, or you think the car should be detailed monthly? If it’s not destructive or making the other person’s life crazy, then go for it. But don’t expect your spouse to be part of making things like that happen. Supporting each other doesn’t require doing things most folks would consider excessive. If you want it, then you do it. If she wants it, then encourage her to do it.
And no, I can’t tell you how many throw pillows are too many. But I saw one decorating expert say ten was enough!

Reminds me of that classic scene in ‘Analyze This” when Billy Crystal suggests that Robert De Niro dissipate his anger by hitting a pillow.
There is a language alert, but it’s very, very funny.
