You are totally replaceable at work. You’re not replaceable at home. Home is your real life. Always keep that perspective. ~ Internet Image

That’s simple and brilliant. When we lose that perspective our family suffers and we stack up regrets for our old age.
I’ve had plenty of men bemoan the fact they worked too much and shortchanged their wives and kids. Some of those are now divorced, but most are in poor marriages. Many don’t see their grown children nearly as much as they would like.
You only get one chance to decide how much of your time your family gets today. Shortchanging them once in a while won’t come back to haunt you, but make it a habit and I can assure you that you will live to regret it.

Sometimes in the twist of now
my mind with solemn thought is graced
that grim-faced informs me how
quickly I can be replaced,
that I have no special gift
to offer, and no skill
to make precious and to lift
my meaning above cancer’s kill.
I know that this is not the truth
in my lucid mind,
but heart tries to search out a proof
that’s impossible to find,
a daily cloying reassurance
that to others is annoyance.
I think the opposite is true for me. At work, they have been short staffed and unable to find anyone else to even apply to work there so if I wasn’t there, they can’t replace me and they would go under. Any housekeeping service and general handyman service could replace me at home. Anyone who paid the bills could replace me. There’s nothing that my wife wants from me that couldn’t be provided by any choice of third party. I think my wife would rather have me at work as much as possible as long as it doesn’t impact getting chores done around the house. The more time I spend at work, the less time I will have left to think about the state of our marriage and the less energy I will have left to bother pushing her to change. She may outwardly say she wants me to be home more because that’s what she knows she is expected to say. Deep down though, maybe even below her own awareness, she would rather have me at work and just “say” she wants me at home. My only value is in my paycheck, my chore completion, and my ability to fix things around the house.
