Better Marriage Goals

Yesterday I said rigidly pursuing overly specific goals could be harmful to your marriage. Sometimes the problem is our goal is a way to achieve what we want, rather than being what we want. We try to make a lot of money because we desire to be financially secure. We set goals for our children that we think will help them grow up and become healthy, happy adults. We say and do things for our wife that we think will get her to treat us the way we want to be treated.

Typewriter with the word "Goals" typed on paper.

What if we looked at the real goals behind the goals we set? Being financially secure for example. Does that require having a million dollars? Could we feel secure with less if we made different choices? We want our children to grow up loving the Lord, being decent people, and having a good life. But there are many paths to that and which ones will work for each of our children depends on who they are.

Sex is another area where understanding your true goal is important. “More sex” is a goal, but it’s pretty wide open. A better understanding of what you want and why increases the odds of reaching the goal. Needing release more often is not the same as wanting deeper more intimate sex, and those two things lie down different paths.
