I have posted about setting SMART goals. SMART is an acronym that stands for Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic, and Timely. However, specific can sometimes be a problem, especially if you’re rigid about the goal.

Life is fluid. Things happen and things go wrong. The ability to be flexible is a good thing. That means being able to change or even abandon goals when life makes a goal impossible or too costly. A good example of this not happening is the man who succeeds at his career goals at the cost of his marriage. His wife gets tired of being ignored and leaves him.
In our marriages, we need to be careful about setting goals unilaterally. If you and your wife share a goal that requires you to work more hours to make money to accomplish the goal, that’s fine. But if your wife would rather have more of your time then the goal keeping you at work is a problem.
It’s a good plan to regularly discuss goals with your wife. Share yours and ask her to share hers. Have an honest discussion about the goals and the costs of making those goals a reality. Then make adjustments as seems appropriate.
