Is Your Wife Dodging Your Emotional Baggage?

Please be careful so that it doesn’t fall onto someone you love ~ Lorde – Secrets from a Girl (Who’s Seen it All)

That seems pretty deep for a pop song. But it’s so dead on! I know my emotional baggage has hurt my wife and pretty much everyone else I love.

Emotional baggage is a funny thing. Some folks guard it like it’s a prized possession or a badge of honour. Rather than seeing it for the problem it is, we tell folks it’s who are we. Rather than working hard to be free of it, we embrace it like an advertisement for the Stockholm syndrome.

Perhaps we have a great deal invested in our emotional baggage. If we have defended it, then dealing with it is admitting we were wrong. It’s also admitting we got hurt and some of us think men don’t do that.

The truth is your emotional baggage isn’t a valid justification for anything. It’s garbage that is weighing you down. It does nothing positive for you, and you and your marriage would both be better without it.

And, yes, I know counselling is something else many of us think men don’t do. But brave men who want to be better and can’t do that on their own do get help.
