I happened to see the music video of Sia’s – Saved My Life. It shows a group of girls doing ballet moves at the barre. All of them are in white, except for one who’s in black. The different one moves away from the barre and starts doing modern dance. As the video progresses some of the other girls start to look at what the different one is doing. Eventually, one, then another, and then the whole group move out onto the floor.
So far, great. One person brave enough to be different encouraged the rest to stop being what they were told to be. But rather than all getting out on the floor and dancing the unique dance that was in them, they all copied the girl in black. They had not been set free to be who they were, they had simply chosen to copy a different person who was not them.

I recall seeing this when I was in school. Groups of kids who had rejected the norm all worked very hard to look and act like each other. I do understand – we are driven to belong, to be part of a tribe. We crave acceptance and peer pressure is huge. But when that causes us to be someone other than who God made us to be, that’s a problem.
None of this is to say it’s wrong to be like others. If God called you to be a ballerina, metaphorically speaking, then that’s what you should do. But if you were created to be a modern dancer and you do ballet because all your friends do ballet, that’s a bad plan.
BTW, if you do break free, you will encourage others to do the same. If you have any influence on people who do this, encourage them to become themselves, not to copy you.
Being yourself is important. The world needs who God made you to be. Besides, trying to be someone you’re not is exhausting and makes you miserable.
