Underlying Conditions That Increase Your Divorce Chances

Much of the talk about COVID-19 has included mention of “underlying conditions”. If someone has diabetes, heart disease, cancer or kidney disease or is obese or elderly, they’re at a higher risk of severe illness and death. Death without underlying conditions happens, but it’s rare.

The chance of divorce is also significantly greater if certain “underlying conditions” exist.

This is why two couples go through the same thing and one couple gets divorced while the other sees it as nothing more than a bump in the road. The stressor was the same, but one couple’s marital health was strong enough to survive while the other had underlying conditions that made recovery impossible.

As with diseases, if you have underlying conditions, it’s too late to do anything about them when problems or stress comes. The time to identify and deal with underlying marriage conditions is when things are going well. Of course, this goes against human nature. We generally don’t deal with things that don’t seem to be a problem.

Tomorrow I will discuss some underlying conditions that could result in marriage problems killing your marriage. Today I want to convince you to take those underlying conditions seriously. I could do a very good job of predicting if a couple will survive an affair or bankruptcy or the death of a child if I knew what underlying conditions they had. Personality, integrity, and a solid walk with Jesus are all factors, but the condition of your marriage before the problem is a huge factor. The more underlying conditions you have, the less healthy your marriage is and the less it will take to end it.

Identifying and dealing with underlying conditions is the best divorce prevention there is.
