Last week our church finished a three-part series on Christian unity (links below). It’s been an excellent series and sadly it’s something that is very much needed in our country’s current situation. Our church is not having problems, but given what we see around us it was a wise thing to cover.

Getting along isn’t optional according to God:
“If possible, so far as it depends on you, live peaceably with all.” [Romans 12:18 ESV]
This really puts it on us to make an effort to get along with others. No walking away for petty or selfish reasons, no avoiding difficult people, and no excluding. God expects us to find a way if at all possible.
And there’s a good eternal reason for this:
“By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.” [John 13:35 ESV]
The early church saw this happen. People were amazed at their love for others and especially for their love for each other. Christians went well above and beyond what other groups were doing and this made them stand out. It’s part of why the early church grew so explosively.
“This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you.” [John 15:12 ESV]
If we fail at this, nothing else we do matters. If we fail at this, we are not really following Jesus.
