Beauty

I’ve been reading John Eldredge’s new book Get Your Life Back: Everyday Practices for a World Gone Mad. In the part I’m reading now John is talking about the importance of beauty and how much we need it in our lives.

Ocean, trees, and rainbow

God put this on my heart a couple of years ago at a Bootcamp event. I’ve tried to do better, but honestly, I know I’ve not done as much as I should. Lori and I sit outside when the weather is good and get natural beauty that way, but it’s not enough. When I visit beautiful places I do better, but at home not so much.

What about you? Are you getting plenty of beauty in your life? Aside from nature, you can get beauty from art, music, and dance. And sharing beauty with your wife is a really good way to build your relationship.

I do believe that a part to the sex refusal puzzle is women don’t feel feminine and beautiful anymore. I noticed that women get picked on for “taking too much time in the bathroom” and “spending all my money at the salon.” There was a time men were proud to supply their women with the support and means to look and feel beautiful and feminine.

I do dress up in a classic, beautiful way to go to church, and while I am no Grace Kelly, I have heard men and women whisper about how beautiful I look, because it just isn’t seen anymore. Messy bun and leggings are church-wear these days, or slacks and a nicer knit top to “dress up.”

When clothes were expensive, difficult to make, and challenging to wear by today’s standards, people took care and looked remarkable. With cheap, ugly, easy clothes, we look like half-dressed slobs, and in that, our beauty and femininity is lost. We might cause arousal, but we don’t take his breath away.
